JFS Receives Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation
Grant for Another Pair of Hands
Program provides homemaker services to people living
with cancer
DENVER - April 11, 2006 - The Denver Metropolitan
Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer
Foundation recently awarded Jewish Family Service of
Colorado (JFS) a grant of $42,375 to support Another
Pair of Hands. This program - part of the agency's
Solutions for Seniors/Care Connection Department --
provides frequent and affordable homemaker and care
management services to individuals of all faiths
living with cancer. The Komen Foundation grant will be
used to provide services to clients facing the
challenge of living with breast cancer.
By offering weekly in-home services, including
housecleaning, meal preparation, grocery shopping, and
laundering, Another Pair of Hands helps its clients
focus their limited energy and resources on their
families and their health. Services are provided on a
sliding-fee scale based on income. Another Pair of
Hands also helps clients access resources they need
outside the home such as support groups and food
assistance, guides clients through the
Medicare/Medicaid process, and advocates for them
regarding medical care. The goal is to create a
single-point-of-entry for services, advocacy, and
support.
Each year, Another Pair of Hands assists 30-35 breast
cancer clients between the ages of 25 and 80, who are
uninsured, underinsured, or live on a budget that does
not allow them access to this type of treatment
support. Through the generosity of the Komen
Foundation, JFS will continue assisting these clients,
serving approximately one-quarter of them at no cost.
Also, because of Komen support, Another Pair of Hands
is now able to offer its clients living with breast
cancer two new services - for one month after a
client's death six families will continue to receive
homemaker services in an effort to provide a continuum
of care; and the program will be able to purchase and
use non-toxic cleaning products in an effort to lessen
one of the aggravating side-effects of cancer
treatment - a compromised sense of smell.
Yvonne Sylvan, Another Pair of Hands program
coordinator, says, "This funding will allow us to
serve a greater number of people affected by breast
cancer and ease families' transitions when they
experience a loss. I am grateful to the Denver
Metropolitan Affiliate of the Komen Foundation for its
continued support of this vital program."
Sylvan is scheduled to speak about Another Pair of
Hands at the 2006 Komen Mission Conference, "Many
Faces, One Voice," in Washington, D.C. in June. She
also was honored to present at this conference in
2002.
